20 Tips on UX for AI, AI for UX

The tech world is changing rapidly, and as UX designers and UX researchers, it’s our job to keep up with the pace of these changes.

Yes, change can be scary, especially when approached from a scarcity mindset. It can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking about all the tech jobs AI will eliminate over the next 5-10 years.

Let’s sit with that scary thought for a bit and then reframe it. So what if AI makes tech work more efficient and optimizes for efficiency? What does that mean for us humans? Does it mean cycles of continuous layoffs? Does it mean more competition to get a UX job? Does it mean more competition when it comes to breaking into tech and UX for a career change?

Possibly. Probably. But progress only comes with change, and change is the only constant. So how can we reframe changing work trends to really focus on what matters and approach new challenges with a feeling of calm and control?

- We can start by educating ourselves on AI’s current capabilities and limitations. And we can harness our knowledge to become more efficient when learning and practicing UX. Here are 20 tips on AI for UX, and UX for AI that we compiled for you, along with 25 AI prompts to help you get started with incorporating AI into your UX processes and UX methods.

- Next, we can experiment with incorporating AI into our design process. We highly recommend experimentation within our 4-Month Live UX course at Ideate Labs that starts in September. And we can help you design AI experiences, if that’s something that really resonates with you.

- Good AI design still starts with understanding human needs. Last fall, we had a UX student who was also an experienced stylist and hair salon owner. She knew the ins and outs of her business and her industry, and recognized that there was a need for an AI chatbot system that could help her optimize scheduling new clients and repeat customers into her work week.

She interviewed dozens of salon owners to really pinpoint the key problem that successful salon owners faced when it came to running their businesses. Once she recognized the specific problem, she worked with AI engineers to really scope the technical aspects of her solution. Her AI scheduling system for beauty salons was a unique solution that does not yet exist in the current market.

She balanced business, user and tech requirements to create a solution that truly addresses a specific user problem, while simplifying the solution with AI capabilities, automating salon owners’ day-to-day scheduling tasks. AI wasn’t just a buzzword when it came to designing her solution, it was the solution.

As she evaluated how to build a unique solution, she evaluated the differences between general tech automation and AI-based automation to see whether an AI solution was really needed in the first place. She learned about natural language processing and how product inventory could be imputed into the AI system to upsell beauty products to clients who had booked appointments.

She was able to collaborate with AI engineers to build a working prototype of her salon scheduling solution, which she demoed for her final presentation within Ideate Labs!

Anatomy of a UX portfolio I've noticed that both junior and established UX designers and UX researchers often have trouble creating a compelling UX portfolio with interesting UX case studies. Here's some common pitfalls:❌ They just add pictures of visual UX deliverables on their case study page, or even worse, they showcase the visuals with little or no description explaining their design process. This results in a very superficial UX case study that doesn't really uncover their thought...
