UX Challenge #5: dream UX job?

UX Challenge #5: dream UX job?

If you’ve been stuck with creating your personalized blueprint for breaking into UX, then we recommend thinking through the vision of where you want to be in the next 1-2 years.

Let’s do a manifesting exercise for a minute.

Forget about the current state of the job market right now.

And don’t let your fears around the UX job search stop you from dreaming BIG.

Now ask yourself: What would your dream UX job be?

And give your answer as if you don’t have to work through a tough job market, fears, or constraints. Just dream for a minute!

You might notice that you give yourself the permission to dream about working in industries you haven’t yet considered.

You might notice that you give yourself the permission to go for more mid-senior level UX roles, maybe even management and leadership positions, if you are thinking about rebranding past professional skills or transferable skills.

You might notice that you give yourself the permission to find a UX job where work values, team, and culture play a huge role in your interest for that position.

Now start to prioritize the criteria for your dream UX jobs, in order of what you want:

  • What are your top 3 industries to work in for UX? Is it UX for healthcare, finance, e-commerce, or social media? Something else?
  • What are your top 2 UX career paths? Is it UX research? Product design? UI/UX design? Content design?
  • What does your ideal work environment look like? Is it remote work? Hybrid? A team where there’s lots of creative collaboration?

Next, we need to get practical on how to help you stand out from the crowd to land your dream UX job.

Take some time to be brutally honest with yourself. Ask yourself the following questions to diagnose what’s stopping you from landing your dream UX role. And really think through what kind of help you need with helping you land your dream UX job.

  • What are some knowledge gaps that are preventing you from landing your dream UX job?
  • What are some mental and emotional blockers preventing you from going after what you want?
  • What are some gaps in the way that you present yourself to hiring managers?

Remember, that getting to where you want to go doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It often takes a supportive community to help you get there by helping you address knowledge gaps and weaknesses, while building up your confidence in your strengths!

Anatomy of a UX portfolio I've noticed that both junior and established UX designers and UX researchers often have trouble creating a compelling UX portfolio with interesting UX case studies. Here's some common pitfalls:❌ They just add pictures of visual UX deliverables on their case study page, or even worse, they showcase the visuals with little or no description explaining their design process. This results in a very superficial UX case study that doesn't really uncover their thought...
