UX Challenge #3: Break up with your toxic job

UX challenge #3:

Break up with your toxic job

If you are reading this, you are probably feeling a little burned out by a current toxic job or past toxic job that has inspired you to seek a career change and pivot into UX design or UX research.

We are here to tell you that it is okay to break up with your current toxic job or situation, if that’s what you need. We just recommend having a plan to go about doing it strategically, having something new lined up before you quit!

But first: what are the red flags that a break up is even needed in the first place?

  • You don’t feel like you have work-life balance. A lot of ladies we talk to mention working long hours and feeling drained both emotionally and physically by the end of the day, to the point of complete exhaustion. If this sounds like you, then you need to start scheduling some time for yourself each day to recover! We’ve especially noticed that women transitioning from healthcare, physical therapy, education or service industry roles are especially in need of more work-life balance in their lives.
  • You don’t feel appreciated or heard in your current role. It can be extremely taxing to work in an environment where you are talked over, or where your ideas go unheard. If you are someone who is constantly coming up with ideas on how to improve processes at work, but get met with skepticism and resistance to change, then that’s not a healthy or innovative work environment and we can very much empathize with why you want to leave! You deserve a role where you feel heard and your ideas are appreciated!
  • You don’t feel challenged in your current role. It’s also possible that you just feel indifferent about your current role and current situation. You know in your heart of hearts that you can do better, but the salary and the work culture is comfortable enough that you are slow to seek out change. Ask yourself: Where do you want to see yourself in the next 5 years? What do you have to do to get there? What more could you be doing or achieving or earning if you change jobs or change careers?
  • You feel like you’ve been low-balled. As women, we don’t advocate for higher pay enough! We have talked with hundreds of women who earn anywhere between $50-70K in their current roles, while working long hours and multi-tasking to cover multiple roles for a company or team. This is simply not acceptable! An entry-level UX design or UX research role can help you earn as much as $85K-120K, while mid-senior level UX roles pay as much as $120K-180K. The pay in UX is a HUGE incentive for change and striving for a new career in tech.

So how are you going to land your dream UX job that pays 6-figure salaries? We recommend following our blueprint into UX to help you break up with your current toxic job.

Anatomy of a UX portfolio I've noticed that both junior and established UX designers and UX researchers often have trouble creating a compelling UX portfolio with interesting UX case studies. Here's some common pitfalls:❌ They just add pictures of visual UX deliverables on their case study page, or even worse, they showcase the visuals with little or no description explaining their design process. This results in a very superficial UX case study that doesn't really uncover their thought...
