UX challenge #1: the right UX career path?

UX challenge #1:

The right UX career path?

Have you found the right UX career path or are you still sort of feeling that out?

This is the first question we ask when you book a 20-min strategy call with us to learn more about our UX courses and UX mentorship services.

Most people are still trying to figure out the answer to this question, whether they are seasoned UX professionals going through a layoff or recent UX bootcamp grads or UX learners and career changers.

And the answer will constantly change and evolve as you grow and evolve. The point is that over our call, we really take the time to feel out:

  • Are you someone who identifies as more of a creative or more of a strategist?
  • Has your past work been more creative or strategic? (to create your UX rebrand)
  • What type of work org excites you? (startup, agency/consulting, corporate)
  • What type of work logistics motivates you? (remote, hybrid, in-person)
  • What type of work style resonates with you? (jack of all trades, specialist)

If you are having a hard time answering these questions, you can take our 2-min personality quiz to see what UX career path best suits your personality and work style.

And then comes our hardest question of all, which might surprise you. We’ve found that most people have a hard time answering this one because of self-doubt or self-limiting beliefs. The question is:

What’s your dream UX job, or what does your dream UX job look like?

At this point during our call, folks usually pause and say, “I haven’t really thought about that, good question!”

When really this is THE foundational question! This is the question that helps you set your long term vision and goals for yourself! What we are really asking is:

  • Where do you want to be?
  • Where do you see yourself thriving, even if it takes 1-2 years to get there?

So for today’s UX challenge, we are challenging you to answer this question for yourself! And you can email us or book a 20-min call with us to chat through your answer as well :)

Sometimes, we are afraid to name our dreams in specific terms because we are afraid of rejection– the what if we don’t get there, the what if we don’t achieve what we want to?

The beauty about dreaming is that it can help us set a vision for ourselves, even if it means that we don’t necessarily get exactly there. Instead, we can work towards our dreams and end up getting close to where we want to be. It’s aspirational, and it helps us stay focused.

Once you are able to articulate where you want to be, we can help you get there. This often means tailoring your UX resume and UX portfolio to be very focused on your end destination. We will help you with the journey to get there! This means:

  • Booking a 20-min strategy consult call to articulate your dream UX job and talk through what UX career path you want to pursue, as well as the specific work preferences you have.
  • Discussing your past work and how we can strategically rebrand it to show off your UX expertise and UX skill sets, as well as other relevant industry expertise and skill sets.
  • Planning out a UX project that aligns with your dreams. At Ideate Labs, we will help you turn your project idea into a startup vision and 2 UX case studies, one in UX research and one in UX design.
  • Check out our free UX mini course on how to choose a project topic and learn about product scoping, business strategy, and Blue Ocean strategy along the way. We recommend striking a balance between your past work and your future destination!

For example, Valerie was a physical therapist for 10 years before taking the Ideate Labs live UX course and choosing healthcare as her Ideate Labs project topic. She ended up building a healthcare platform that helped PTs assign HW to their patients. Her work impressed CVS corporate, and she landed a UX lead role with the company because she possessed both healthcare, management, and UX expertise!

Aliyah was a mid-level marketing associate who rebranded her work and landed a UX research role with Reddit.

Vlada was a new grad who turned her pandemic passions into a UX project and landed a UX designer role, even going on to travel to Europe for 2 weeks to conduct international UX research as part of her first UX job and first full time job!

Anatomy of a UX portfolio I've noticed that both junior and established UX designers and UX researchers often have trouble creating a compelling UX portfolio with interesting UX case studies. Here's some common pitfalls:❌ They just add pictures of visual UX deliverables on their case study page, or even worse, they showcase the visuals with little or no description explaining their design process. This results in a very superficial UX case study that doesn't really uncover their thought...

UX Challenge #4: Create your personal UX blueprint We’ve often heard from UX bootcamp grads who work with us that they end up receiving a lot of clarity on how to approach the UX job search after talking to us. They learn to focus on their core strengths and create their own personal blueprint for breaking into UX. We’ve worked with UX bootcamp grads from General Assembly, CareerFoundry, Springboard, DesignLab, Avocademy and more. Here are some issues that we’ve noticed with their UX career...
