UX Challenge #2: What got you into UX?

UX challenge #2:

What got you into UX?

What got you interested in UX in the first place? We love hearing stories from prospective students about how they discovered UX and why this career path excited them the most as they were evaluating different options.

We’ve heard that folks are excited about the creativity that this career path allows them to pursue, the ability to balance creativity and strategy when solving problems.

We’ve heard that folks are excited about the impact they could make on user behavior and user needs, helping to improve quality of life or optimize ways of doing things, making solutions even better than they are today.

We’ve heard that folks are excited about the higher pay that working in tech offers, the ability to earn six figure salaries and have more disposable income to pursue personal goals.

We’ve heard that folks are excited by the work-life balance, the opportunity to work remotely or in a hybrid role, quitting current jobs that are high-stress or high-fatigue or very physically taxing.

We are curious about YOU.

What was the turning point in YOUR personal life where you felt that you needed to make a BIG change? A career change? Book a 20-minute call to tell us about your UX career journey.

We all face times in our lives where we feel stuck, unsatisfied with our present situations, wanting to achieve more, wanting to have more…

Feeling stuck can feel uncomfortable, and some folks choose not to act on that discomfort. Instead, they choose to talk themselves out of making a BIG change, or try to justify to themselves why sticking to what they have and what they know is the best option. Sometimes this can look like:

  • Refusing to admit you have a problem. You might be excited to hear about UX work, talking to UX designers and UX researchers online or at networking events. You might even watch free YouTube or TikTok day-in-the-life videos about UX work, UX design and UX research. However, when it comes to actually learning UX and building a UX portfolio, you feel overwhelmed and can’t seem to gain the momentum needed to create the UX projects and deliverables required to become a good candidate for your dream UX job.

  • Refusing to ask for help, whether that’s with writing a killer UX resume, revising your UX portfolio, or learning UX. This can also mean refusing to look into UX mentorship options and working with a dedicated UX career coach to help you achieve your professional goals. UX design and UX research work by nature is very collaborative. It’s not enough to self-study or take the Google Coursera course to land a full-time, high paying, UX job or contract. Collaboration is a crucial part of the UX design process. If you are not collaborating with UX mentors and peers and users and stakeholders, then you are not really practicing true UX.

  • Refusing to invest in yourself and refusing to focus. It can be very tempting to float from one free learning resource to another, downloading UX cheat sheets and workbooks and templates, consuming all forms of UX content whether that be video, blog, or news content. However, there is such a vast amount of knowledge out there, which can often lead to a lack of focus in how you consume and learn UX content. No, you don’t have to consume every piece of UX content on the internet or master every UX topic to land a UX job. But, you do have to be strategic about what you learn and focus on learning skill sets for 1-2 preferred UX career paths. It helps to invest in a UX course that can help you learn the specific skill sets you need and help you play to your strengths when it comes to rebranding your past work. Investing in a UX course can help you focus and help you see if you really want to commit to learning specific, focused UX material.

  • Refusing to get continuous support. We’ve worked with folks who might have already taken 1 or 2 UX bootcamps, but still need help filling in certain knowledge gaps, or help with UX career coaching and improving their portfolio and resume. Remember that learning is continuous! Even after you complete a UX bootcamp or UX course, it is your responsibility to keep learning and keep focusing on learning knowledge that can help you with a specific UX career path or industry.

We’d love to hear about what is making you feel stuck about breaking into UX at the moment. Book a 20 minute strategy call with us to talk through where you need help and we will help you develop a blueprint to getting to where you want to be.

Anatomy of a UX portfolio I've noticed that both junior and established UX designers and UX researchers often have trouble creating a compelling UX portfolio with interesting UX case studies. Here's some common pitfalls:❌ They just add pictures of visual UX deliverables on their case study page, or even worse, they showcase the visuals with little or no description explaining their design process. This results in a very superficial UX case study that doesn't really uncover their thought...
